Compare Mahindra XUV 500 and Toyota Fortuner

Are you following up with the latest SUVs in India or planning to buy one soon? I have been keeping an eye on the Toyota Fortuner for last several months. The arrival of Mahindra XUV made the decision making tougher. In this post, I will compare Mahindra XUV and Toyota Fortuner.

Mahindra has been trying to get its share in the SUV market in India with it's Scorpio. However, the performance of the car did not meet the expectations of the Indian car lovers. Comfort of driving was not up to the mark. The MUV from Toyota (Innova) was often compared with Scorpio even though they are not really in the same class. And Scorpio was not even close to driving comfort of Toyota Innova. Another comparable car is the luxury SUV - Toyota Fortuner, which was considered a far superior car compared to Scorpio and Innova.

Mahindra Scorpio could not even give any close competition to Toyota. This made Mahindra in an embarrassing position. However, the arrival of Mahindra XUV 500 could change the equations. Mahindra XUV 500 can give a very tight competition to Toyota Innova and Fortuner.

Who are the potential customers of Mahindra XUV 500?

There are many potential customers like me, who want:

1. Comfort of Innova, but some thing more in terms of features, elegance, luxury etc
2. Power of Scorpio, but not the uncomfortable driving
3. Elegance/luxury of Fortuner, but not too high price

And Mahindra XUV 500 meets all of the above 3 criteria for me. It offers comfortable driving (I haven't done a test drive yet, but the specification of the car says it can give a comfortable drive), luxury comparable with Fortuner, affordable price (about 35% less price than Fortuner).

I have been looking at Innova and Fortuner for a while and could not decide which one to pick. I wanted something better than Innova but Fortuner was too high on the price. My first impression of Mahindra XUV 500 is, it is THE CAR FOR ME.

Compare Mahindra XUV 500 to Toyota Fortuner

Toyota Fortuner is a luxury class SUV and should not be really compared to a much lower priced Mahindra XUV 500. However, since Mahindra does not have an equivalent class car and Toyota does not have a lower segment SUV, let us take a closer look at them and compare the features.

Price difference
Mahindra XUV is a much lower priced SUV, compared to Toyota Innova. The ex showroom purchase of Mahindra XUV 500 in New Delhi is 10,80,000. The Fortuner would cost you about 18 lakhs in the same city, which is about 65% higher price than XUV. This gives a big advantage for XUV 500. Those who want a good performing global car without spending a lot, Mahindra XUV is a great canidate. If you can afford the premium cost to own a Fortuner, go for it.

Which car to buy - XUV 500 or Toyota Fortuner?

In my case, I am really confused. Since I work from home and already have another car, I am not in a hurry to make a decision. I would wait and see how Mahindra XUV 500 perform in the coming few months and listen to feedback from people who really used it for a while.

In a nutshell, this is what I found so far:

1. Fortuner is a luxury car and have the feel-proud advantage compared to XUV 500.

2. Fortuner is from Toyota which offers great service in India.

3. Toyota cars have proven reliability and credibility, but not all Mahindra cars can claim the same.

4. Fortuner is longer and taller than XUV, but the XUV is wider than Fortuner. Which one you prefer?

5. XUV gives a better mileage (+2km).

6. Mahindra XUV 500 has lot of advanced and sophisticated systems, but not all Mahindra service centres are equipped to handle this kind of sophisticated cars.

If both the cars come at the same price, Toyota Fortuner is undoubtedly the winner. But the price of Fortuner is about Rs 10 lakhs more than XUV 500. Do you think it is worth paying such a premium for Fortuner when XUV 500 is pretty close on comfort and luxury?
